Katsinam: Figuren der Pueblo-Indianer Nordamerikas aus der Studiensammlung Horst Antes.
Rare out of print book. Written in German. A beautiful exhibition collection catalog of Kachina dolls.
The Katsinam are spirits and ancestral spirits of the Pueblo Indians, who have lived for centuries as maize planters in the arid regions of southwestern North America. As ambassadors and mediators between the worlds, the magical beings traveling on clouds carry the people's prayers for rain, fertility and health to the gods.
The unique collection of Katsina figurines, which the painter and sculptor Horst Antes has built up since 1961, is the largest and most diverse in terms of types of its kind in Europe. Horst Antes has dealt intensively with the cults and rites of the Pueblo Indians. Their culture and artistic form of expression are reflected in his art and transformed into his own visual language. With his committed interest in these figures, Horst Antes ties in with the enthusiastic debate of the early Surrealists such as André Breton, Marcel Duchamp and Max Ernst. The catalogue, which depicts and describes in detail 529 Katsina figures (413 Hopi, 52 Zuni and 64 Rio Grande-Katsinam) in colour, is the most comprehensive work on this topic to date – an indispensable reference work for the specialist and an aesthetic pleasure for everyone.
