A pair of large South-American cowboy spurs from around the turn of the 19th to 20th century.
This antique set of Chilean rowel spurs, or espuelas, was traditionally worn by huasos, Chilean horsemen. The idea of the Huaso is like the American cowboy or the Gaucho in Argentina. The figure of the Huaso on horseback dressed in a traditional poncho and hat is an important part of Chilean folkloric culture and plays a vital role in parades, fiestas, holidays, and popular music.
Each spur presents a large, starburst-form rowel, and elaborate finely chased designs to the shank and heelband. Next to exhibiting exceptional decoration, these spurs are distinguished by the spokes. The extra-large rowels produce an amazing, high-pitched, singing/ringing sound when spun, due to it’s high number of spokes (this pair has 39 points).
Chilean ranchers were generally a wealthy, higher class of society and the noise their elaborate spurs made as they rode and walked literally would announce their presence. The arms have strap holes for securing these spurs to the boots of a huaso or gaucho cowboy.
These rare vintage collectible spurs are great office or home decoration and add particular charm to western decor.
Handmade in the late 1800's or early 1900's. Stunning piece of history.
